Murlo is situated in an ideal position, on hilltops varying from 300 to 500 metres. The wide open spaces of the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia unfold to one side, and on the other the woods and scented Mediterranean vegetation of the Val di Merse stretch as far as the Maremma and the Metallifere hills.

As in the rest of Italy, the population of the borough of Murlo has been influenced by people settling from other areas of the country and abroad, and has reached a population of two thousand inhabitants, grouped in two main centres of about 700 inhabitants, Vescovado and Casciano di Murlo, and scattered among various other small villages - Murlo, Lupompesi, Miniere, Casanova .. , and isolated farmhouses.

In 2003, Murlo received the certification of "Comune BANDIERA ARANCIONE" (Orange Flag Community), which identifies Italian communities with requisites of excellence according to a profile of livability and tourism.
